Slipping quietly into a Japanese tea house hidden within the towering skyscrapers of Tokyo, you long to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a little while. Bamboo cladding and minimalist paper lines the walls, and you wander over to a small wooden table and take a seat by the window, the aroma of tea inviting you to stay awhile to recharge from a hectic day. Your tea arrives in the reassuringly ubiquitous black cast iron pot, and as you inhale the steam, your eyes skim the room, and your whole body slowly unwinds. Pausing a second to take in the beautiful yet simplistic Shibui wallpaper, you feel reconnected to the natural world, miles away from the hectic city outside.

Shibui is known for its subtlety and unobtrusiveness. The metallic shades and white tones of Shibui wallpaper merge to create tactility that you have to reach out and touch. Run your fingers over each concertina, fumbling for the fold, for something that connects you to nature. As your eyes explore the time-aged paper, a sense of nostalgia creeps in. Is it the remains of an ancient treasure map or a tattered, treasured love letter you can’t bear to throw away?

Paper is symbolic of hope and anticipation. Of all that could be written, and everything that already has. Paper is a memory of the tree that once stood tall, a poem hastily scrawled. There’s something so much more personal about getting a hand-written letter from a friend rather than a dashed-off text message. It’s meaningful and permanent. Shibui wallpaper by Mind The Gap is evocative of all these things. Its simplicity takes your mind on a journey, reconnecting you to the world.

Mind The Gap’s home is in Transylvania! Did you ever meet anyone from Transylvania in real life? They’re a group of talented artists inspired by the melting pot of crafts and traditions typical of their mystical homeland.
