Wall lights with shade FAQs

Are fabric wall lights suitable for any room?

Wall lights with fabric shades are best suited to living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways, and offices.

We do not recommend choosing fabric wall lights for your kitchen as odours, grease, and dirt are likely to get trapped in the shade. Similarly, wall lights with fabric shades aren’t a good choice for bathrooms because the fabric could go mouldy if constantly exposed to damp air.

How do you clean fabric wall lights?

To clean your wall lights with fabric shades, simply wipe them with a microfibre cloth or use a feather duster. If more stubborn dirt or stains are present, remove the fabric shade and wash it gently in a solution of lukewarm water and gentle detergent. You can find clear step-by-step instructions on how to clean fabric lamp shades in our guide.

Do not put your fabric wall light shade in the washing machine or use any harsh cleaning products on it – this is likely to damage the fabric.

What height should wall lights with shades be installed at?

Ultimately, this depends on where in your home you plan on installing the lights, as well as the layout of your interiors. You’ll want to ensure the wall lights are positioned at a height that gives you enough light to see properly, without being so close that they dazzle you.

Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to position your wall lights with shades in the upper third of your wall. However, if you’re placing your wall lights by the sofa or next to the bed, you may need to place them further down the wall to ensure they sufficiently illuminate the area you want them to.
