Springing joyfully through the fairground, you inhale the familiar scent of buttery popcorn. Senses stimulated by the abundance of flashing bulbs, organ music and candyfloss, you stand mesmerised. There’s timeless magic to the fair that never leaves you – an escape from everyday life. The chance to relive joyful rides spiralling down helter-skelters, carefully selecting a horse to ride the carousel, causing carnage with a dodgem and twirling on the waltzers until the sights of the fairground merge into a dizzying blur.

Questing for old-school carnival games, you stumble upon a tin can alley. Handing over your money in exchange for three wooden balls, you set your sights on winning an oversized stuffed teddy. The first ball barely grazes the top of the tin pyramid. You put some power into the second throw and send the top two rows flying back - it all lies in the final ball. Inhaling deeply, you take aim and fire. The last three cans clatter to the ground, and you excitedly accept the life-sized bear you always wanted to win as a child.

Pottering through the fair, you absorb the sights and smells, watching as bubbles blown from the wand of a small child bob slowly skywards, contorted reflections of the big wheel mirrored back in the iridescent surface. Feeling full of joy, you head home, smiling as you stroll to your car.

Eyes adjusting to the normality of home, you turn the dimmer switch on the wall, bathing the kitchen diner in soft ambient light. Sitting at the dining table, you gaze at the iridescent glass bubble chandelier above.
