Wrapped in a blanket snuggled on the apartment’s balcony, you’re grasping a mug of sumptuous hot chocolate in your hands, inhaling the sweet steam as it swirls skywards. Peering across the city cloaked in the most exquisite inky blue, you smile. You never grow tired of this view, especially at dusk. The skyscrapers take on a whole new level of beauty, their lights twinkling as people return to their homes for the evening. From your perch on high, you can see everything: you follow the city pigeons darting between towering buildings and watch lights from planes blinking silently overhead. There’s safety here, hidden away from the world, looking out across the skyline unobserved.
Eventually, leaving your sentry post and pottering into the kitchen, you turn the lights up a fraction - dimmer switches are a godsend - and the deep blue space glows into life. You love the shadows in here. Grasping hold of one of the skyscraper black cupboard handles fitted to your cupboard door, you at once appreciate the smooth, cool metal against your fingertips. The knurling provides subtle, understated detail. Pulling out a wine glass, you close the cupboard and pour out a generous measure before heading into the lounge.
Flicking on the table lamps, you melt into the sofa, keeping watch on the world outside from your cocoon is so much more relaxing than the TV. As the skyscraper lights start to flicker out one by one, you realise that the rest of the world is heading off to bed, and perhaps you should too.
