Tough Love: Designed to endure, cherished for years If you spend any time around James and Ally, one thing becomes clear: they both care a lot about the small details in a home. But not in a showy way – more in the subtle way you notice when something feels well made. James will often pick something up and turn it over in his hands, looking at how it’s been put together. He’s always interested in how things work and how they could be improved, while Ally’s able to interpret how these details make you feel in your home. It’s these two perspectives that have shaped Dowsing & Reynolds from the beginning. “Your home doesn’t need to be a showroom – it just needs to feel right for you.” Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, Co-Founder From design studio to your home Most new designs start with James, where he plays around with concepts, materials and shapes until something begins to take form. Some ideas come from travel or design shows and others come from personal everyday frustrations – things around the house that don’t quite work as well as they should. And for James, longevity is non-negotiable. Rather than design throw away, flash-trend pieces, his focus sits with creating something that you’ll love for years to come. Once a design is ready, components are sourced from specialist suppliers around the world who produce the materials and parts we need. Once they arrive at our headquarters in Yorkshire, it’s over to our assembly team. The people behind the products One of the things people notice when they come to D&R HQ is how hands-on the process is. Every assembly specialist spends around 150 hours training before they start working on customer orders, learning the technique and quality standards expected of every product that leaves the building. It’s a process that allows us to keep a close eye on the details and make sure everything meets the standards James set when the design first began. “I’m always looking at functional things around the house and trying to enhance them – it’s the touchpoints around a home that can sometimes get forgotten about.” James Dowsing-Reynolds, Co-Founder & Designer Finishes that add character There’s a handful of our artisan and special edition metal finishes that are created in-house, but it’s a process that requires rigorous testing. Powder-coated metals, oxide finishes and blackened steel all behave differently, and our team works carefully to make sure each piece has the depth and character that gives it its distinctive look. It’s slow work compared to large-scale manufacturing and requires a lot of back and forth before it’s ready to sell, but it’s also what allows us to maintain the level of quality we believe in. A team that cares about the details Designers, assembly specialists, warehouse staff, customer service advisors and marketers all work side by side here in Yorkshire. Everyone plays a role in getting products from an idea in James’ studio to a finished piece in someone’s home. And because many of us spend our days surrounded by these products, we’re constantly noticing ways they adapted and improved – which often leads to the next design idea. Why it matters When you choose lighting, switches or hardware for your home, it can often feel overwhelming. Our job is to make those decisions a little easier. By designing products thoughtfully, assembling them carefully, and supporting you with any queries you might have, we hope to give you confidence in the choices you’re making. Because the best pieces in a home are often the ones you stop noticing after a while – not because they disappear, but because they simply feel like they belong.
